Bits and Pieces When wrestlers
DATE: 09/03/2010 04:00:51 / MOOD:

After Don Carathers mentioned the professional wrestlers at the Wooster Armory during the late '50s and early '60s, Art Stewart wrote to say he remembered the wrestlers too.

"They wrestled some during the summer at the fairgrounds and for quite some time Replica Tag Heuer Mercedes Benz Watches at the Armory," he recalled. "One night a friend invited me to go to the fairgrounds with him to watch them. They had a four-man tag team that got into a "big fight" and were hitting each other with folding wooden chairs. It looked really serious!

"Afterwards," he continued, "we went to Min's Diner, which was at the foot of Beall Avenue and East Liberty Street, to get something to eat.

In came the four wrestlers, joking and having very peaceful conversations among themselves. It was all a sham! That was enough wrestling for me."

News store

Recently Midge and Gary Halderman ran across a letterhead from Gary's dad's business back in the 1940s -- the Wooster News Store. The business was first located on the southeast side of the Public Square near Boyd's Drug Store before moving to the northeast side.

"Gary," Midge Halderman said, "remembers his dad (Mac Halderman) and their dog Wimpy going off early every morning, including Sundays, to open the store and be there for the morning newspaper deliveries.

"It was back when 3-digit telephone numbers were used -- as compared to our current 10-digit number -- and a simple East Side Square address was enough to let you know where to find them."

More memories

Lew Hodgett of Whittier, Calif., was in the eighth grade when the skating rink in Madisonburg first opened.

"I was one of the first employees, handing out rental skates," he said.

"It was a great job since it was only a couple of miles from home ... and it allowed me to work one or two nights for a couple of hours during the school year."

As a young boy, Glen Kessinger of Big Prairie lived near North Street and Columbus Avenue and said he used to sneak off to go swimming at nearby Spring Lake. "I got into more trouble," he added.

Dan Shadburn said The Hobby Shop was the cheap_Gucci Messenger_shop_usa_uk_40 best place in town for youngsters to spend their allowance.

Former Wooster resident Elsie Evans said she and her husband, Carroll, have been trying to recall all the shoe stores in town.

"I remember," she wrote, "one had a machine that allowed you to see whether or not your shoes fit properly. I was fascinated with that as a kid."

S&H Green Stamps

Fred Bowen is sure there used to be a place in the area where you could go to redeem your S&H Green Stamps.

Do you know where it was?

Third to 'wire up'

Did you know that electrical service made its debut in Wooster back in 1886 when a small electric generator was set up in the old Wooster Armory?

Shortly after the electric generator was demonstrated, city council granted the Schuyler Electric Co. the right to supply electric energy to the community. Street lights were quickly put into operation making Wooster the third city in Ohio

DATE: 09/03/2010 04:00:29 / MOOD:

This is one tag the city could have done without. The state government on Thursday admitted that Mumbai had become the malaria capital of the nation. Out of the total cases registered in the state, 47% were from the city.

Shetty said only 2 % of the construction work contractors were following the norms laid down by the civic body to contain malaria. "There are 2,500 ongoing constructions in the city. Even though the civic body made compliance of the anti-larvae treatment compulsory for developers to get the intention of disqualification for the construction, none of the builders follow it. Now, the BMC has decided to recover the expenses from the developers," the minister said.

An official from the public health department alleged that BMC officials were protecting the developers. "Criminal cases should have been registered against developers who weren't following the norms," he said.

The official also claimed that five wards in the city had the maximum number of victims. "Lack of sanitation, filth and contaminated water are the major reasons of the epidemic in the wards in eastern and western suburbs," he said.

Carrying Caine David Caruso's
DATE: 09/01/2010 06:05:59 / MOOD:

Never has a prop - a pair of cool sunglasses - became more iconic than on this police procedural TV series, "CSI: Miami." With its eight-season long presence, the show's producers even had a back-story written just for the ever-present eyewear, a history revealed for the first time on the premiere episode of its 8th season. But the trademark shades isn't the singular bit that makes Horatio Caine one of the most recognizable characters on television these days.

Parmigiani watches

As the Lieutenant on Miami-Dade's crime lab supervising its day shift, Horatio (affectionately called "H" by the team he fiercely protects) exudes an air of heroism that even the actor that created it deems is important in this day and age.In an interview with Bulletin Entertainment, David Caruso shares, "I was able to kind of bring in some of the signature things that happened- sunglasses and so on, and the look, the sound, the voice, body posture and the other things that came to me in the early stages of creating the character. And fortunately, they fit with the tone of the material and in the direction of the show."Thrilled with viewer reaction, he admits, "It's been a lot of fun. People have picked up on the character. And every year, more people do impressions of him and he seems to have been [included] in the cultural lexicon in the United States and around the world."But Caruso delves deeper into what his work on the character means to him. Referring to all the attention, Caruso states, "I hope that's because he represents things that matter- that are important to people. I think that Horatio Caine makes people feel safe. That he exudes a form of confidence and ability that says if you have a problem, he would be somebody that you might want to call on because he's been that effective and he's been able to really help people and affect lives. And so, those elements are in that character, in a way, because they need to be. He needs to have this type of effect on his environment."Horatio's environment, in fact, is a series of volatile situations that are punctuated most times with blood and violence, leaving in its wake a long line of victims that could practically be anybody in real life. Calling his portrayal "reverential" in line with the "terrible events we're investigating," Caruso says, almost as if in character, "The laws of life is a very powerful thing. And the victims are in a very, very vulnerable state. I've always been conscious of the fact that real respect should be paid the victims."It is no wonder that despite the flashy production elements, the state-of-the-art set with its expensive crime lab equipment, its cut-to-cut action scenes and larger-than-life representation of good-versus-evil, there's a certain truth about Caruso's Horatio Caine that viewers pick up on and latch on to. And a major reason behind it is Horatio carries with him real-life burdens.Throughout the seasons, Caruso points out "very challenging periods" where his character had fallen in love and gotten married, only to lose his wife shortly by way of murder. He's been in a tensed relationship with his missing brother's wife at some point, just as the presumably dead brother surfaces from a long undercover assignment gone wrong. He also discovers a 16-year-old son who goes to Afghanistan."A lot of what he's dealing with is out of his control," he states. "And so I think that Longines Replica there have been many directions that have really challenged him on some level."Season 8, which is currently airing on Asia on AXN, kicks off with a flashback on how Horatio formed the team back in 1997. Regressing 12 years in time, the cast was made to appear much younger, which wasn't an easy feat. Brought in especially for the season premiere was no less than the special effects make-up team that worked on Brad Pitt's Be
