A MUM who set up a national support group following the sudden death of her teenage son has described the turmoil caused by an unexpected heart condition. Anne Jolly, founder of the Essex-based charity Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome UK (SADS UK) spoke out following the death of Meltham teenager Sophie Kirkland.

The 15-year-old died after being found unconscious at Primrose UGG Sale Valley Holiday Park, near Filey, in May.

An inquest this week heard how she could have died from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome, after tests failed to identify any heart problems and there were no suspicious circumstances.

The coroner recorded a verdict of natural causes.

Anne's own son, 16-year-old Ashley, died unexpectedly in his sleep in 1998.

She said: "It is so bewildering and devastating for people. They are often in total limbo.

"The biggest thing is not understanding what has happened and you are left searching for answers.

"In some cases, there are answers, but when nothing can be found it is just a nightmare.

"Having no answer leaves it very difficult to come to terms with, especially UGG Sale when the person was very healthy beforehand.

"It is very difficult to accept."

The charity works hard to raise awareness of the condition, which is thought to be responsible for 500 deaths each year.

It is often linked to cardiac arrhythmia - where the heart suddenly goes into chaos.

Sometimes there are symptoms including fainting, dizziness or chest pain, but often there are no warnings.

Children and young people are often affected because they are likely to appear healthy and show no symptoms.

Anne added: "There can be an undiagnosed heart condition causing an abnormal rhythm.

Planning to buy power savers for your home, inspired by advertisements claiming they reduce your bill? Better be cautious then, as these may turn out to be tall claims after all. A recent study by the Consumer Education and Research Society (CERS) says that the claim that this gadget reduces your electricity bill, is far from the truth.

Manufacturers of the 'power saver' claim that the device improves the power factor (PF) and reduces current (electricity) consumption. This notion, however, does not hold true, according to the research carried out by CERS. It says that commonly used domestic electrical appliances and gadgets have a lagging or negative PF, due to which, the appliances consume reactive or unreal power to some extent.

This is not recorded by energy meters. Thus, the appliances draw an extra amount of current due to negative PF. Whereas, the power savers are merely capacitors having a leading or positive power factor, due to which the PF improves, but the current gets reduced. On the installation of a power saver or capacitor, the PF is increased from 0.8% to 0.95%, whereas the current reduces from 10 to 8.42 amps, as a result of which the 'real current' (Ir) remains the same in both the cases.

CERS tested the 'Oreva' power saver as per installation instructions. The equipment claims that it saves power to the tune of 30%, proved false. Normal appliances in India are designed to perform at 230 volts, but the installation of the power saver reduces it to 216 to 218 volts, which leads to underperformance in electrical appliances.

BULLISH City analysts today said that BP shares are worth buying - - but only if investors buy r4 ds are prepared to take a risk.

They said BP shares have fallen far enough given it can afford to pay its dividend and meet the costs of the crisis in the Gulf of Mexico.

"However, for those investors that are reliant on dividends for income, we would recommend pencilling in a dividend suspension for the remainder of 2010."

Stewart added that "investors should hope for the best but prepare for the worst".

Attention local farmers and artisans -- Riding Mountain Biosphere Reserve has a new initiative and they want you to get involved.

"We all know that there is a growing trend of people who are following the '100-mile Diet', eating locally, cooking more meals at home, and becoming aware of sustainable eco-conscious eating and green foods," says Valerie Pankratz, chanel handbags Executive Director of Riding Mountain Biosphere Reserve.
