Blog Entry: Method Man has been exposed to a whole new audience ... the strawberry and cream-munching set at Wimbledon. New converts could now just as likely come from the leafy environs of SW19 as from the badlands of inner-city America. Replica accessories The reason for this new demographic? Andy Murray wore a T-shirt emblazoned with the lyrics to Judgement Day, one of the most popular songs from the leading artist. The American hip hop singer, who is also a record producer, actor and member of the infamous hip hop collective, Wu-Tang Clan, was born in Long Island, New York, in 1972 with the name Clifford Smith. He took his stage name from 1979 film The Fearless Young Boxer. The ambitious rapper first launched on to the hip-hop scene as part of the Wu-Tang Clan and was one of only two members to secure a solo song on the group's epic debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) in 1993. The band's most famous offering in the UK was Gravel Pit which was released in 2001 as part of the album, The W. Method Man's solo debut, Tical, released in 1994, was more successful in the United States, although it only reached the dizzying heights of number 40 in the NME's Top 50 Albums of the Year in 1995. The song which Murray has thrust into the media spotlight was released in 1998 on Method Man's second album, Tical 2000: Judgement Day. The rapper was also part of the successful Hard Knock Life Tour with Jay-Z during which he recorded the profanity-laced Blackout! with fellow rapper Redman. The success led him to star Embroidered patches in popular television shows including The Wire - often praised as the best ever TV series - in which he played Joseph "Proposition Joe" Stewart's nephew Cheese. In the end, he gets his comeuppance from rival members who take exception to his methods. The Wu-Tang Clan, complete with Method Man, will play the O2 Academy in Glasgow in August and it is the only Scottish date for the re-united eight-piece (formerly nine before the death of ODB). Scott O'Neill, director of Oh Productions, one of the promoters of the show, said: "The band were originally just going to play in Manchester and London but we received a call from the O2 Academy in Glasgow saying they would really like them. Atletico Madrid armoire "We weren't sure if Glasgow had a big hip hop base but it's selling really well so we're confident it'll be a great show." Perhaps Murray is right on the money in his choice of training T- shirt and music as O'Neill thinks they are "definitely relevant". He said: "I think rap like the Wu-Tang Clan's is more relevant than ever, especially in the past five years as there's been a resurgence of hip hop and it seems to be a lot of students' music of choice." And when asked if Murray's T-shirt will boost the popularity of Method Man's band, O'Neill replied: "Who knows?" What's the story? ...
